I am fairly sure it updated by itself, were there any way I could have prevented it?

The game was updated yesterday anyway so even if you have version 92 it won't work. Everyone who wants to use EB (and isn't vip) has to wait until CD is updated to support a EB version that works with the newest PoE patch (takes like a week btw).
